9 'Superfoods' and Drinks That Aren't as Super as You Think

The Daily Meal spoke with a panel of nutrition experts, many of whom tirelessly debunk myths about perfect, nutrient-packed foods. We came up with a list of nine superfoods that are not as super as you think: Either the common claims behind them are exaggerated, as with blueberries, or there’s simply very little truth to their health benefits.

1. Açaí

<p><a href="http://www.thedailymeal.com/travel/5-best-bowls-oahu-hawaii-1"><strong>Açaí berries</strong></a> are one of the most commonly cited superfoods out there. Unsweetened açaí is full of antioxidants, but açaí bowls are “basically glorified non-dairy fro-yo cups with toppings,” says certified holistic health coach Annie Lawless. “Many shops don’t use unsweetened açaí, and the toppings can be a nightmare, because plain açaí just doesn’t taste that great. One bowl can pack more calories than a Big Mac.” </p>
Açaí berries are one of the most commonly cited superfoods out there. One bowl can pack more calories than a Big Mac.”

 2. Agave Nectar

Agave nectar, which comes from the same plant that yields tequila, is often touted as the healthier, more holistic alternative to sugar. But in this case, it         couldn’t be further from the truth. “Agave is comprised of more fructose than any other sweetener (70 to 98 percent), while high-fructose corn syrup is about 55 percent,” says Lawless. “Fructose is broken down and directly converted to belly fat.

3. Blueberries

Blueberries are often thought of as antioxidant-rich powerhouses, and that may be true to a certain extent, but according to Goodness Direct nutritionist Naomi Haynes, other more affordable berries like strawberries and black currants actually contain more antioxidants.

4.  BulletProof Coffee

Often touted by the paleo community, bulletproof coffee (that is, coffee blended with butter and "octane oil" — a medium-chain triglyceride derivative) is said to trigger weight loss and give you an energy boost. But according to dietitian Joe Leech at DietvsDisease.org, that claim doesn’t hold much truth at all. “Dumping butter in your coffee is ridiculous,” he says. “Butter is not healthy. And even if adding butter to your coffee does help you fast through the day, you have effectively reduced the total nutrient content of your diet.”

5. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds have a ton of fiber, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. They’re often cited as a source of energy, weight management, hydration, strengthened immunity, and overall health and wellness. But eating too many chia seeds, says nutritionist Naomi Haynes, can lead to gastrointestinal problems and gut irritation, so be careful!

6. Fermented Food

No, we’re not talking about beer (although wouldn’t it be great if beer were a superfood?). Fermented foods like fish, cultured vegetables, and even certain tangy condiments are often touted as “potent gut detoxifiers.” As always, be careful when you hear the word “detox” being thrown around. Dr. Barry Sears, a bestselling researcher and biochemist, says that you would have to eat a large amount of fermented food for it to have any effect.

7. Gluten-free bread

Gluten-free everything has been so ingrained into our society that gluten is often seen as the villain. So anything gluten-free must be healthy, right? Not necessarily. Gluten-free bread tends to be rich in starch to make up for the lack in gluten, says Sears. The result of habitual consumption of gluten-free products is that the starch rapidly breaks down to glucose, increases insulin levels, and eventually makes you gain weight.

8.  Green Juice

Another favorite among the health-conscious group is green juice. Often comprised of ground-up apples, kale, and other fruits and vegetables, it’s the unofficial mascot of the juicing movement. But many bottled green juices can contain up to 42 grams of sugar, which can cause weight gain after long-term use, according to dietitian Amanda Hayes Morgan. So read the label before you buy!

9. Kale

Kale is perhaps considered the king of superfoods, and has become the poster child of the new-age healthy revolution. But even though it’s packed with fiber and potassium, other leafy vegetables like spinach, chard, and watercress are actually healthier. “It's important to enjoy kale in moderation because of its high oxalic acid content,” says Morgan. “Oxalates have the ability to bind with calcium, which can lead to muscle weakness and kidney stones.”

For further reference, read Vern Verona’s book on “Cancer Fighting Foods.”

Fruits and vegetables that are high in nutrients and antioxidants are often called “Super-foods”.

VERY IMPORTANT:  Cancer patients should eat about 70% raw foods, with the remaining 30% of other foods, but never microwaved foods because the microwave oven kills the life-force in foods.

Baby boomers can prevent and fight cancer and heart disease by eating alkaline foods.

The National Cancer Institute and Food and drug administration has done research on certain foods having cancer fighting compounds. Research shows these foods have phytochemicals. These chemicals are found to be fruits and vegetables, and they help prevent cancer.

Also, every person, especially cancer patients, should:
A.  drink Alkaline Ionized Anti-Oxidant Water from your own machine at home to beat cancer, and

B.  take "Transfer Factor" supplements to boost the immune system.
Cancer patients in stage-3 and stage-4 should take the fast-track to cancer-free by going to a Mexican cancer clinic for natural, alternative treatments like the author of this website, Peggy Sue Roberts, did.  Read my cancer survivor story below or in the right column.

Sapodilla and Its Benefits

Sapodilla is a tropical fruit that readily grows in Florida and Central America and has many nutritional and health benefits. A perfectly ripe sapodilla tastes like a pear that has been baked in brown sugar. Sapodillas are a good source of vitamins A, C, & B-complex as well as minerals such as iron, copper, and potassium. They are rich in antioxidant compounds called tannins which have potent anti...-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, and anti-cancer properties. These tannins also have the ability to neutralize acids by precipitating proteins. Sapodilla is known to be particularly helpful for constipation, IBS, gastritis, reflux-esophagitis, hypertension, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, macular degeneration, and lung, colon, and oral cancers. Sapodilla is also excellent to boost immune function and help to prevent chronic ailments such as sinus infections, migraines, joint and muscle pain, nerve twitching, and bursitis. Sapodilla has the ability to replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly which makes it the perfect food when you are on the go. Sapodillas are a delicious treat to eat by themselves, but they are also wonderful in smoothies, fruit salads, and pies. Sapodillas need to be fully ripe before consuming or they can give off a bitter flavor and produce a “fuzzy” mouth feeling. A ripe sapodilla should be soft all over and easily yield to gentle pressure. Sapodillas can often be found in the tropical fruit section of your supermarket and online fruit stores that ship when in season.

This particular variety of sapodilla is oval in form. Its color is light brown. It is very small in size compared to its fellow family members. This variety ripens earlier than the others but still maintains its great taste.
Let’s look at the Sapodilla fruit benefits:

Sapodilla Health Benefits:

1. The Sapodilla fruit is high in fiber content. This makes the sapodilla fruit very good for digestion. It is also used in the treatment of constipation.

2. Sapodilla is able to prevent the occurrence of colon cancer.

3. Sapodilla fruit has tannin substances. In fact, tannins have several beneficial applications medicinally. They act as remedies for hemorrhoids and diarrhea.

5. Consumption of sapodilla mixture with a pinch of salt is a recommended home therapy for the cure of constipation.

6. The leaves of the sapodilla fruit can also be used as a medicine for inflammatory diseases. The leaves work as an oral anti-inflammatory agent. Take clean sapodilla fruit leaves and then boil them for about ten minutes. This boiled water which contains the extracts of Sapodilla can be used as medicine. It can be used for gargling as well.

7. Fiber is a key part of good nutrition as it benefits the body in several ways. Sapodilla gives 5.6 grams per 100 grams of dietary fiber, thus making it an excellent laxative. The fiber extract of Sapodilla also helps to protect the mucous membranes present in the colon from cancer-inducing toxins through binding firmly to them.

8. The biggest qualities of Sapodilla are its haemostatic qualities. This fruit is extremely valuable in stopping the loss of blood. It helps in decreasing blood loss in piles, injuries and in many other medical terminologies.

9. The consumption of Sapodilla fruit benefits in reducing the level of infections. It helps in lessening viral diseases in addition to bacterial infections within the body. It also decreases inflammation caused by swelling and helps to ease pain.

10. Chikoo or Sapodilla is an excellent source of minerals such as potassium, copper and iron. In addition to these minerals, Chikoo also consists of foliate and niacin acid. These vitamins and minerals help in making the body powerful and energetic.

11. Sapodilla or chikoo is a natural sedative. It is used to relax the nerves and also to relieve stress. It is often suggested as a part of the diet of those struggling with insomnia and panic disorders. It is one of the best natural anti-depressants prescribed by medical practitioners for disorders like MDD (major depressive disorder), Unipolar Disorder, etc.

12. Sapodilla has high natural latex that is commonly used by dentists to fill up the tooth cavities.

13. Sapodilla also helps in the treatment of cold and cough. Consumption of this fruit helps to remove nose blockage and also in case of persistent coughs.

14. The simple sugars like fructose and sucrose that are the main ingredients of this fruit rejuvenate the body with natural energy.

15. Folic acid contained in this fruit is used in the formation of red blood cells and also help in the development of the fetus during pregnancy. It also helps to prevent the formation of homocysteine which is harmful for health.

Sapodilla is a good fruit for a growing baby’s health. Let’s know how Sapodilla benefits baby’s health:

You can introduce your baby to this fruit, between the ages of 6-8 months as it has a sweet and rich texture. It is safe to introduce sapodilla to infants because it does not cause allergic reactions. Here are some of the health benefits of introducing sapodilla in your baby’s diet:

Vitamins: The Sapodilla fruit is full of vitamins which are ideal for infants and toddlers. Vitamins C, A and B are complex vitamins that are found in sapodilla. These vitamins are essentials for babies and toddlers as they help in the physical and mental growth of the child.
Vitamin C is good for developing a strong immune system, whereas Vitamin A is good for developing good eyesight. Vitamin B, again, is helpful in taking care of various functions in the body including brain development, metabolism of lipids, hemoglobin production, enabling cell division and production of red blood cells.

Minerals: Several minerals found in sapodilla including calcium, iron, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, copper, selenium and zinc play an important role in the facilitation of various functions in the human body. These include hemoglobin formation with the help of iron and copper, electrolytes with the help of potassium and sodium; calcium and phosphorous help in bone growth and magnesium helps in ensuring the chemical reactions in the body.

Antioxidants: One of the important sapodilla benefits is that it is a good source of antioxidants. These play an important role especially in the diet of infants. By giving sapodilla to your baby, you will not only ensure that your baby gets a good amount of vitamins and minerals but also that he/she gets a good amount of antioxidants that will provide protection from inside.

Antimicrobial properties: Sapodilla also has antimicrobial properties. It is a home cure for diarrhea and dysentery in infants and toddlers. Rather than giving them high medication we can use raw and unripe Sapodilla to cure diarrhea and dysentery. Tannins present in the Sapodilla tree bark can cure diarrhea or dysentery when boiled in water and given as a medication.

Cure for cough and cold: The Sapodilla fruit can be very helpful in curing cough and cold in infants. The expectorant properties found in sapodilla can provide relief from congestion and clogging that are co-related with phlegm and mucous formation.

Some precautionary measures should be taken while feeding Sapodilla to your little one.
Sapodilla, as a fruit is very good for your child. Avoid the unripe fruit as it will be very difficult for your baby to swallow and digest. Ripened sapodilla fruit is soft and can be crushed if pressed gently. This is the right stage to include the fruit in your baby’s diet. Also, remember to keep Sapodilla in a dry and cool place.

How to handle sapodilla: Peel off the outer skin first and then remove the seeds because they are big enough for your baby to cause choking.

Crush the fruit: Crush the fruit pulp before giving it to your baby. Though the fruit is soft, yet there can be issues when your baby eats the fruit. So, crush it, make a puree of it and let your baby enjoy this delicacy.
Last but not the least; here I am presenting a sweet and healthy recipe for all the kids out there:

Chikoo Choconut Milkshake:
This is a protein drink, an excellent combination of ingredients that melts your taste buds. A protein drink should be part of our day to day diet as it is required by our brain to work efficiently. This energy drink consists of chikoo, soyamilk and nuts. Chikoo provides carbohydrates (glucose) to the brain cells; on the other hand soya milk and cashew nuts provide protein required for good health and healthy function of the brain cells.

  • Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice- 2 tablespoons
  • Raw Honey- 1 tablespoon
  • 12 to 16 oz or one glass of water

Now Here’s What’s in it.

amazing detox drink

Cinnamon is an excellent spice which is well-known for maintaining glucose level and improving insulin sensitivity in type II diabetic patients as stated in a study published in the ‘Proceedings of the Nutrition Society’ journal. It was found that after taking the Cr supplementation (a compound present in cinnamon); glucose, insulin, cholesterol and HbA1c levels were all improved in subjects with type II diabetes.

Apple Cider Vinegar can lower blood pressure when consumed daily as it contains acetic acid – a compound known to decrease blood pressure or hypertension. The antihypertensive effects of acetic acid and vinegar were proven in a study published in ‘Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry’ journal in which the spontaneously hypertensive rats showed significant decrease in blood pressure and rennin activity when given acetic acid or vinegar.

Lemon Juice is a good source of flavonoids which are known for their antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is the most abundant antioxidant in lemon. Since it contains antioxidants, lemon juice helps fight free radicals in the body, thus strengthening our immune system. The antioxidant properties of lemons are supported in this study which showed that the lemon flavonoids suppressed oxidative stress in diabetic rats.

Honey offers numerous benefits to our body due to the presence of a variety of nutrients from enzymes, minerals and vitamins to polyphenols. This was supported by an article published in the ‘Journal of the American College of Nutrition’. In short, honey contains many health components that favor good health.

3 Superfoods Loaded With Brain Nutrients To Help Prevent Cognitive Decline

Everyone expects to slow down as they get older, including their mental faculties.

Age-related dementia and the increase in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly have prompted scientists to take a closer look at the causes of cognitive decline.

There is a correlation between diet, lifestyle, toxins in the environment and brain health. There are things you can do to keep your brain (and the rest of you) healthy by paying attention to your bodily needs.

Getting enough sleep and exercise goes without saying.

Specifically, vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy gut flora are part of a normal diet and optimizing these will help maintain cognitive faculties.

Additionally, there are three foods that you may not be getting any or enough of that have been shown to prevent cognitive decline.

1. Coconut oil

Once dismissed as having too much fat, it turns out this is one of the healthiest things you can eat and it doesn’t take much (one to two tablespoons a day) of this versatile oil to reap its nutritional benefits.
It tastes good, too!
Coconut oil keeps your brain healthy as its medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) are a source of energy to maintain an adequate fuel supply. Make sure the coconut oil is raw and organic.

2.  Bacopa monnieri

This herb isn’t new to Ayurvedic medicine and has been known to treat cognitive conditions as well as epilepsy, asthma, and ulcers.

The herb is known by many names including Brahmi, Indian pennywort, and water hyssop. A National Institutes of Health report of a 2002 study concluded that:
“The results show a significant effect of the Brahmi [bacopa monniera] on a test for the retention of new information. Follow-up tests showed that the rate of learning was unaffected, suggesting that Brahmi decreases the rate of forgetting of newly acquired information.”[1]
In addition, Brian Kairalla at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine published a paper recommending further large-scale studies after his research concluded that “its [bacopa monnieri] potential to play a role in protecting or delaying age-related memory decline or delay Alzheimer’s disease onset and/or progression” is significant [2].
He also mentioned:
“It is interesting to note that cognitive gains made in the Raghav study that involved patients with insidious age-related cognitive impairment were maintained even after discontinuing the intervention.”

In other words, the treatment was healing.

3. Walnuts

They say that some foods look similar to the parts of the body they most support: tomato for the heart, sliced onion for blood cells, sliced carrot for the eye, and—not surprisingly—walnut for the brain.
A study published in the United Kingdom showed that people who ate half a cup of walnuts each day for two months scored significantly higher in an inferential reasoning test.

It’s the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and vitamin E found in the nut that are the source of the improvement: they are known antioxidants.

We want to age gracefully and enjoy good health; feeding your body to bolster its own ability to maintain and heal will assist you in doing so.
